Posters are read from a distance

A poster needs to work at two metres and again at 30 cm. Use a big headline, one main image, and small details underneath. Fewer words are better.

Size versus distance

A3 fits notice boards and shop counters. A2 works for walls in corridors and shops. A1 and A0 are for windows, walls and exhibition areas where people pass at a distance.

Paper and lamination

Gloss paper gives strong colour. Satin is smoother with less glare. Lamination protects posters in busy areas and outdoors under cover but adds cost, and laminated posters are harder to tack with drawing pins without splitting.

Preparing files

Design at the finished size or in proportion, and use 300 dpi for photos at that scale. Text under 10 mm tall will be unreadable from far away on large posters.
